ESPN Fantasy Football Podcast, comprised of Matthew Berry, Field Yates, Stephanie Bell, and Daniel Dopp, put on a Woman's League and Woman's League 2.0, fantasy football leagues for the 2015 NFL season. With the growing number of women who play fantasy football, it made perfect sense to start a Woman's League to add to the mediocre advice and nonsense provided by Matthew and Field. There was large amount of emails received from women who wanted to be in the in league (2 of which were my own), and second league was created.
Why did I want to play in the league?
I don't personally know many ladies who play fantasy sports so to be a part of an (almost) all-women league would be a fun experience. Since I actually listen to each and every podcast, having a team in the league would add extra fun to the football season. Before getting the invite to join the Woman's League 2.0, I thought that the experience would really help me learn and understand fantasy football on a different level, and I was right!
This is a 16-team league and I had the 11th pick. Here's my thinking through some of the picks:
I was really disappointed with my draft picks. I printed out different rankings, had a game plan, but it didn't stick. I can't predict how others are going to draft and during the draft I felt like I needed to "go with the flow" but hindsight being 20/20, I should have stuck to my plan and drafted my targets. Cam Newton and Delanie Walker were high on my list. No idea why, but I have it etched in my head that I shouldn't overreach for draft picks. After going through this draft and the fact that it's a 16-teamer with a waiver wire that is a wasteland most of the time, draft how you want to draft. The point is to have the best team so put it together how you want to.
As you can see above, I drafted Marcus Mariota. Slight Hawaii bias there, not gonna lie. If he had stayed healthy for the whole season, my team would have done better during the weeks he was out and I may have 1 or 2 more wins.
Too Good For Field (Samantha), was the favorite to win from the beginning and we had a good battle in Week 3:
Green Bay and KC were the MNF game and I didn't think it would come down to one point. Samantha has Maclin, and since the Chiefs haven't scored a TD from a WR in forever, I thought I was in good shape. I barely made it...
Then comes the ass-whooping I got from Anita Marks in Week 6 (no shame in that, she's awesome):
This was one of the few weeks Murray shows up.
Ever thought that Joique Bell could win you your week? Well, that's what happened in Week 8 in this league. Crazy stuff happened here!!! Who woulda thunk it?!?
Week 13 against Daniel Dopp:
Sorry, Daniel, I had to. He's #doingitright though, by being the only guy in the Woman's League 2.0. If you listen to the podcast, you'll know the hashtag reference.
The Final Standings
This was the most stressful fantasy football league I played in this season and it was so much fun at the same time! In the future, I will make better decisions with draft picks and who to roster on game day. Even though I didn't come into this league already being the best in past leagues or a commissioner, I feel like I have learned so much and this experience has really helped in my fantasy football development and that's exactly what I was looking for.
For those of you who were wondering about the Woman's League 2.0, I hope you enjoyed this!
